[01:53] All right, we just finished a great interview, our main interview with you, going over your gift to all of us in your leading, in your wisdom, in your experience and helping us to inspire our true performance, which is the focus of the Ziglar Show. So, on that, the Ziglar Wheel of Life, we talk about it with every guest, just to go through and find out what you’re doing or not doing in your daily or consistent healthy habits through the seven spokes. So we are going to dive in. I’m going to dive in on the one that maybe, well, I don’t, I’m not going to suit your favorite, but it’s probably not a hard one, physical. What do you do to keep yourself physically strong and well?

[02:32] A lot — and this is my least favorite, so I hate that I need to work out but I think it is so important. Monday through Friday, five days a week, I am absolutely religious about going to the gym, working out, pushing myself, I’ve focused primarily on weight. I’m really trying to get lean and I’ll do cardio work as well. I often do my lifting at a cardio pace. I’m getting my heart rate up and up and breaking a sweat. That’s big, and then from the health and nutrition perspective, I’m really just about what I eat, how I eat, and most important, what I don’t.

[03:13] Can I ask the, you know, I know your body tries to drill it down, one thinks you’re Paleo or you’re, you know, whatever it may be. Do you have — give us the crux of your dietary regimen.

[03:26] Yeah, no problem. First of all, right now you and I are talking. It’s noon my time and I’m fasted. So I haven’t eaten anything yet today, and I do that pretty routinely when I’m in a key genic state, which I am right now. No I don’t only do genic. I alternate between high protein/ high fat and a key to genic diet. So I hardly ever take carbohydrates that aren’t vegetables, in fact. Man, it is — when I say rare, I’m talking definitely less than once every, probably once every two months that I’ll have like just bread or something like real carbohydrate. So I eat meat, vegetables, and then like oils and stuff like that. Like, all of the oil with coconut oil, stuff like that. So, it’s what people in the health and fitness community will call a very clean diet.

[04:34] Next is family, family relationships. I know in the last hour we talked, you and your wife have been married, I think you said, fourteen years; known each other seventeen years. But from a family, in a relationship standpoint, what do you do to keep that well?

[04:48] So my wife and I’ve been married for fifteen years, which is just amazing, and putting time and attention on it is critical, and that is, unfortunately, something that my wife had to teach me for the first decade of our relationship. It was me just working nonstop all the time. And so she really had to be the one to put a foot down and say, “You know, at some point we really have to carve out time for the relationship, and that’s just absolutely critical,” and I totally agree. So we now, one, we co-founded this company together. She was part of the founding team of Quest Nutrition as well, and and the company that we’re now running together is, in fact, Yuri, and so that is literally all day, every day, our goals are aligned with folks on the same thing. And then on top of that, working together is very different than managing your marriage. So we put just a lot of time and energy into communication. That’s huge for us, finding quality relax time. So Saturday is a pretty sacred day for us, where we spend a lot of time together, and that’s just been really, really important. We do a show together as well. We create social content relationships theory. Just sharing the lessons, the rules of engagement, which is something that we focus a lot on — how to approach the other, how to communicate with the other, what to do when somebody is being emotional, how not to be too emotional — all of those things.

[06:14] Excellent! Well, mental — and I think it would be easy for folks to think that this is your room right now, this is where you are spending your days working, is in the mental area. So the question would be, do you just wake up out of bed and you’re good to go always? Or are there some habits that you do to maintain that it?

[06:34] My entire life is the result of habits and routines. So, by nature, I am an incredibly lazy, emotionally weak, individual. People don’t believe that now, because of how hard I work currently, but if you had met me when I was a kid, nobody would have questioned that. So I wanted to get out of that rut, and so I really had to find routines and things to make that happen. So I use a lot of different strategies. One, I meditate — that’s huge for me. Two, I use a bright line strategy. So there are just things I do and don’t. So take diet. I don’t eat sugar, so that’s just like a bright line. So the other day I was out with somebody I’m really trying to develop a relationship with, and, as you know, a life eating or not eating, people kind of feel judged, and so it’s like mad and plus or anything I really want to eat, but it’s like I have a bright line at stuff that’s sugary. So while I would gladly break my key to genetic state, I would have something that’s higher protein, and say I should have, that day I wouldn’t break the sugar. So that’s just a bright line and I do that because I want it so much. I love sugar, it is so delicious, like, I am not judgmental of people at all, man, it is a very valid life to say, “I don’t mind that my life is going to be a little bit shorter, I’m going to indulge in the stuff.” I love that people do that; I totally totally get it. I just haven’t done that very easily. So; for me; it doesn’t give me the result that I want; so that’s but one example. I get out of bed in ten minutes or less once I realize I’m awake; that’s a bright line, because I’m so laying in bed for hours and hours and hours. So to make sure that I don’t do that; I create that bright line. So those are a few of the strategies that I use; I use lots of habit routines to make sure that I stay on the straight and narrow.

[08:26] What the next one is is financial, and sometimes I can look a little odd for somebody like you, had great financial success, but I assume that there are still some things that you do to make sure that you are well, that things are managed, that they’re maximized — one of those.

[08:42] Yeah, I mean, look, I’m in a very fortunate position so I have a bookkeeper, I have very talented accountants, so from a zap perspective, it’s very different what I do now than what I used to do. So what I used to do, maybe a little bit more advantageous for people. So my wife and I have from the very beginning of our marriage actually kept separate spending accounts, so we kept a very detailed list of every outgoing dollar that we had and we contributed to those equally. My wife and I have always split things dead even, including the amount of spending money, so even when I was the only person working I didn’t begrudge her. I didn’t say, “Oh, you shouldn’t. I should get more spending money than you because I’m the one that’s actually working.” That never made sense to me, you know, in a marriage it’s really got to be an equal partnership. So we had equal amounts of spending money; we could spend our spending money on whatever we wanted, but it was like a pre-allocated amount of money, so if you only had, let’s say $50 for the wish, there was a time when you wanted to spend one hundred dollars when you had to save up for two months, right? It was just very clear, is very dry. So things like that I think are critical. People need to know how much they have, are going to have; six months of your current burn in savings is critical. Emotionally for people it’s critical.

[14:01] Oh. All right folks, look back to this great interview with Tom Bilyeu on starting on the sixth spoke which is spiritual. So the next one is spiritual. that aspect of your life. What do you have there?  

 [14:16] Key driver for me there is meditation, which gives me that quiet time to hear my own intuition, so I think it’s very, very important. So I’m not a religious person, but I definitely consider myself spiritual in the sense there’s something more beyond what we can understand consciously, and so finding ways to tap into that — and for me, meditation is purely just getting in a quiet space. I listen to the sounds of nature in my headphones and really create a quiet, emotional, and quiet from of thoughts, perspective, space, so I can hear the whispers of intuition because they usually are whispers. And then reading. Man, like discovering things. I am so — I am moved to my core with all, by the things both that we understand and don’t understand, and exploring those, to me, is just — it makes me feel alive, like the acquisition of skills to me is spiritual in the way that I explain it’s people, once you believe that you can do anything you set your mind to really think about that for. Once you believe you can do anything you set your mind to without reservation, then how you spend your time becomes a spiritual consideration. So I think very deeply about how I spend my time, what the things are that I pursue, building passions in my life, and then pursuing those passions — like, those are all just deeply spiritual for me.

[15:39] Can I ask just on the book reading we talked about in the main show that we did just a minute ago, you have a book list recommend a book list. Folks, if you go to the website you’ll find that we talked about you creating, hopefully, a movie list as well. But on the books now, I know you’ve got some that have been dramatically impactful into your life, but what’s the most recent one that has really inspired you?

[16:02] Well, so the only true answer to that is I’m reading about the micro bio right now, and that is having such a profound influence on my wife’s overall health that I’m filled with the gratitude that people are going to understand it, the people taking the time to write it down, So I just have an overwhelming, emotional response to everything that I’m reading there. Then, on the maybe more expected side, I’m reading Long Walk of Freedom by Nelson Mandela like, if you haven’t read that book, like, it’s, it is unbelievable, the way he responded to the life that he had. It just — the number of people that would be consumed by bitterness is, I don’t know that I would have been like, and I think like, that I really can process through stuff and get to where I like, what’s my objective and I’m going to do what is in accord with my objectives. But, Wow! When I hear what that guy went through, good Lord, it is amazing, and that’s somebody that I had sort of long been familiar with the mythology of his life, but never really taken the time to read it, and now diving into that I am blown away! I moved to like, or it is just…

[18:46] The next one is career and business, and again, you have achieved great success there. You are achieving great success there, so if that’s one where you have specific things you are doing to keep that strong, but as well as, I like how you answered the financial aspect of going back and saying, hey these are the things that I did to get me to this level of success, either way or both.

[19:08] Yes. I’ll give you this one from what I do now because it’s something that people can adopt immediately to great effect. So, first of all, switch your identity from being right, being smart, being good at what you do, to being a learner. If you come into everything you do being a learner, like that’s number one. Number two, you must get obsessed with being great you must be good at what you actually do. Like, you actually have to build a product that matters and be exceptional at things. Like, there is no substitute for that. And then three, momentum matters. This is what drives me nuts, like momentum matters. You’ve got to create momentum, you’ve got to think big, you’ve got to dare big, and then actually try to bring it to fruition, and not this year, not this month, not even this week — today. And if you show up every day trying to make some grand thing happen right now, then you’ve got a chance. It’s actually happening in a year or two years, but if you don’t try to do it today, it’ll never happen.

[20:07] That is probably one of the biggest killers I’ve seen in my life in personal development, is when somebody gets excited they go after things and then at some point six months later you want to…where they’re at this, if something happened I lost momentum. Such significance to hear from you with this. This last one is personal and, obviously, we could say these are all personal, but we really try to frame this and what do you do just for you, whether that’s for fun, for joy, for hobby, the things that you may not be pursuing? I am trail running. It’s just the thing that gives me the greatest inspiration, I have no desire to be a professional trail runner, I do it for me and me alone. So what are some things that you do to make Tom the best, Tom, that you can be, just from a personal, just for your standpoint?

[20:57] So I absolutely love reading beyond all reason to measure, I love film and now T.V. like I never would have thought in the ’90s that I’d be saying that, but T.V. like, it’s so good. So, there’s a lot of amazing amazing things. Reading stuffs that are my number one, and then the third thing that I’ll add to that list is video games. My wife and I play video games together. We’re actually what they call a fire team. It is in the game that we play, I should say, and it is unbelievably fun to team up with your wife to try to get better and to go essentially — it’s, we look at it as like modern day, for us, competition. So, whereas, you know, maybe back in the day we would have played sports, now for us at the sports and we just really really enjoy that.
